What a Capacitor Actually Does
Electric motors need far more power to start than to run, the same way it takes more effort to push a stalled car than to keep it rolling. The capacitor is the part that solves this. It charges up like a small battery, then dumps that stored energy into the motor at startup. Many systems use a dual capacitor that serves both the compressor and the outdoor fan motor, and then continues supplying a steady phase of power while they run.
Your capacitor lives in the electrical panel of the outdoor unit, behind the service panel. It looks like a small metal can, about the size of a soda can, with wire terminals on top.
Signs Yours Is Failing
A failing capacitor announces itself in a few recognizable ways:
- Humming without starting. The unit tries to start, hums for a few seconds, and gives up. That’s a motor asking for a jolt it isn’t getting.
- The fan won’t spin on its own. The outdoor fan sits still while the unit hums. (You may find advice online about spinning it with a stick to prove the capacitor is bad. Please don’t. Fingers, sticks, and spinning steel blades are a bad mix.)
- Clicking, then nothing. The system clicks as it tries to engage and never catches.
- Warm air and long starts. The compressor struggles to start, so cooling is weak or absent.
- A swollen or leaking can. A healthy capacitor has a flat top. A domed, bulging, or oily one is finished.
Why Louisiana Is Hard on Capacitors
Capacitor ratings drift as the part ages, and heat accelerates the drift. What you can safely do yourself: listen. If the outdoor unit hums without starting, or clicks and gives up, you’ve gathered exactly the information a technician needs, and you can say so when you call. Cut the system off at the thermostat so the motors stop trying.
What you shouldn’t do is open the panel. A capacitor holds its charge with the power off, and testing or swapping one safely requires discharging it correctly and matching the replacement’s ratings to the motor.
