What Is a Contactor?

A contactor is the heavy-duty electrical switch inside your outdoor AC unit. When your thermostat calls for cooling, a small control signal pulls the contactor closed, completing the high-voltage circuit that powers the compressor and fan. When it wears out, the unit either won't start at all or, worse, won't stop running. It's a small part with an outsized ability to ruin an August afternoon.

The Switch Between Your Thermostat and the Heavy Machinery

Your thermostat runs on a small, safe control voltage. Your compressor and condenser fan run on full household power. The contactor is the bridge between those two worlds: a spring-loaded switch in the outdoor unit’s electrical compartment that snaps shut when the thermostat calls for cooling and springs open when the call ends. That soft clunk you hear from the outdoor unit right before it roars to life? That’s the contactor closing.

How a Contactor Wears Out

Every time the contacts open or close under load, a tiny arc of electricity jumps between them. One arc does nothing. Tens of thousands of them slowly pit and burn the contact faces, the way a welder’s spark scars steel. The opposite failure is a contactor that can’t close, or can’t stay closed. You’ll hear fast clicking or buzzing from the outdoor cabinet while the unit fails to start, or it may start and cut out again in quick cycles. Sometimes the contactor’s own coil is the culprit, sometimes it’s weak control voltage from a fault elsewhere, and a failing capacitor can dress itself up in similar symptoms. Which is exactly why a clicking unit deserves a proper diagnosis, not a guessed-at part.

DIY or Call a Pro?

This one belongs to a technician, full stop. The contactor’s entire job is switching the high-voltage side of your system, and its supply terminals stay live whenever the outdoor disconnect is on, whether or not the unit is running. What you can do from the outside is observe. Note whether the unit clicks without starting, hums, or refuses to shut off, and cut it off at the thermostat, or at the breaker if it’s running nonstop, while you wait.
