The Gatekeeper on the Coil
By the time refrigerant reaches your indoor unit, it’s a warm, high-pressure liquid with no cooling to offer yet. To do its work inside the evaporator coil, it has to pass through a restriction and flash into a cold, low-pressure mist. The TXV is that restriction: a small brass valve mounted at the coil’s inlet, with a thin sensing bulb clamped to the line leaving the coil. The bulb reads how the coil is performing and pushes back on the valve, swinging it wider or pinching it down. More demand, more flow. Less demand, less.
It Adjusts All Day Long
Many older systems meter refrigerant through a fixed orifice, which is exactly what it sounds like: one hole, one size, every condition. A TXV behaves more like the pupil of your eye, widening and narrowing constantly with the light. On a mild April morning it feeds the coil a trickle. On a July afternoon in Acadiana, with the system running flat out against heat and Gulf humidity, it opens up and keeps the coil completely fed. That constant matching holds your cooling steady and your efficiency up across everything a Louisiana season throws at the equipment.
When It Fails, It Imitates Everything Else
A TXV rarely fails loudly. It sticks. Stuck mostly closed, it starves the coil: weak cooling, warm air at the vents, sometimes a coil frozen solid because too little refrigerant is moving through it. Stuck open, it floods the coil and can push liquid refrigerant toward the compressor, the costliest component in the system to endanger.
Notice that none of those symptoms points at the valve by name. They look like a low charge, a dirty filter, a tired blower. Even on a technician’s gauges, a failing TXV produces pressure readings that wander and refuse to add up. More than one system out there has been topped off with refrigerant again and again when the real problem was a valve quietly refusing to meter. That’s how this small part earned its spot near the top of the misdiagnosis list.
DIY or Call a Pro?
This one has no do-it-yourself version. The TXV lives inside the sealed refrigerant circuit, and opening that circuit takes EPA certification and specialized equipment, not a wrench and a free Saturday.
What you can do is gather the story: when the cooling went weak, whether ice has shown up, whether the problem tracks the heat of the day. That history shortens the diagnosis.
