The Cold Half of the System
Your air conditioner has two coils. The outdoor one dumps heat into the yard. The evaporator coil is its indoor partner: copper tubing dressed in thin aluminum fins, usually folded into an A shape, sitting inside your air handler or the cabinet above your furnace. Cold refrigerant runs through the tubing while the blower drags warm household air across the fins. The refrigerant soaks up that heat and hauls it outside, and the air moves on cooler than it arrived.
You’ll probably never see yours. It works sealed inside the ductwork, which is why most people meet their evaporator coil for the first time on the day something goes wrong with it.
Cooling and Drying, Same Pass
While the coil chills the air, it’s doing a second job. Moisture condenses onto the cold fins the way a bathroom mirror fogs during a hot shower, then drips into a pan and leaves through the condensate drain line. In a dry climate that’s a footnote. In South Louisiana, where summer air rolls in off the Gulf already loaded with water, it’s half the reason your house feels comfortable. A healthy coil is why 75 degrees indoors feels crisp instead of clammy.
Why Coils Freeze Over
The coil depends on a steady stream of warm air. Choke that airflow and its temperature falls below freezing, so the moisture that should drip away as water freezes onto the fins instead. Ice blocks more airflow, which makes more ice, and the spiral ends with a frozen block and warm air at your vents.
A dirty filter is the number one cause. Low refrigerant does the same damage from the other direction, letting the coil run colder than it was designed to.
If you ever see ice on the coil or the copper lines, turn the system off and let it thaw on its own. Don’t chip at it. The fins and tubing are soft, and a punctured coil turns a minor visit into a major one.
Dirt Is the Slow Version of Ice
Even without freezing, a coil coated in dust can’t transfer heat well. Cooling weakens, runtimes stretch, and the system burns more electricity to do less. Because the coil stays damp through our long cooling season, whatever dust reaches it tends to stay. Coil checks and cleaning are part of a professional tune-up, which is where this gets caught before you feel it in the house.
DIY or Call a Pro?
The filter is your piece of this, and it’s the one that matters most. Check it monthly in summer and change it when it looks gray. If the system ices up, shut it down, let it thaw fully, put in a fresh filter, and try again.
