The refrigerant in new AC systems changed in 2025, and some homeowners are being told they must replace working equipment because of it. They don't. Here's the whole story, honestly told. Updated August 2026.
The Short Version
R-454B is the refrigerant inside new air conditioners and heat pumps sold since 2025. It replaced R-410A because its global warming potential is about 78% lower. If your current system runs on R-410A, you do not have to replace it: it can be repaired, recharged, and serviced for the rest of its life. The new refrigerant arrives when you buy new equipment, and not a day before.

What Changed, and Why
Under the federal AIM Act, the U.S. is phasing down high-global-warming-potential refrigerants. The practical effect for homeowners: since January 1, 2025, newly manufactured residential AC and heat pump equipment uses lower-impact refrigerants. Most manufacturers, including Lennox, chose R-454B.
If this feels familiar, it's because you've lived through it before. R-22 gave way to R-410A a generation ago, and the same pattern held then: existing systems kept running, and the new refrigerant arrived with new equipment.

No, You Don't Have to Replace a Working System
This is the part getting twisted in sales pitches, so let's be precise. The regulation governs how new equipment is manufactured. It places no obligation on homeowners. Nothing in it requires you to remove, replace, or upgrade an R-410A system that's cooling your house just fine.
R-410A also remains legal and available for servicing existing systems. Supply is capped and will tighten over the years, which means recharge prices will likely drift upward, and that's a real factor worth weighing on an older system with a leak. But "your refrigerant is being phased out, this has to go" is not a diagnosis. It's a closing technique.

When You Do Replace, Here's What Changes

One thing you can't do is split the difference: R-454B does not go into an R-410A system. Manufacturers don't approve retrofits, and the components aren't designed for it. The refrigerant changes when the equipment does.

R-454B carries an A2L safety classification: low toxicity, "mildly flammable." That phrase reads scarier than it is. A2L refrigerants sit a full class below genuinely flammable gases like propane, ignite only under narrow conditions, and the equipment built for them includes dissipation design and leak sensors required by current safety standards.
What actually keeps a refrigerant system safe hasn't changed in seventy years: correct installation, tight brazing, and technicians trained on the equipment they're handling.
