What Is an Air Handler?

An air handler is the indoor cabinet that moves air through your home. It holds the blower motor that pushes the air, the evaporator coil that cools and dries it, and often electric heat strips for winter. It doesn't create cooling by itself; it circulates air across the parts that do. Every bit of air you feel at the vents passed through it first, which is why an air handler problem never stays a small one.

What’s Inside the Cabinet

Open an air handler and you’ll find three main players. The blower motor is the muscle, a fan that pulls air from your return vents and drives it through the ductwork. The evaporator coil cools and dries that air on its way past. And in homes without gas service, a rack of electric heat strips covers winter, glowing like oversized toaster elements when the thermostat calls for heat.

Your filter lives at or near the cabinet too, usually in a slot on the return side, and a drain pan sits under the coil to catch the water it wrings out of our humid air.

Air Handler or Furnace?

The two words get used interchangeably, and they’re different machines. A furnace burns fuel to make heat and brings its own blower. In a gas home, that blower often pulls double duty: it moves air for the burners in January and for the AC coil mounted above it in July, so there may be no separate air handler at all. An air handler burns nothing. It’s the all-electric indoor unit, usually paired with a heat pump or a cooling-only system plus those heat strips.

A quick way to tell: a gas line and a flue pipe mean furnace. All wires and refrigerant lines mean air handler.

Every Bit of Air Passes Through It

Whatever your system does for the air (cooling it, heating it, drying it, filtering it) happens inside or immediately next to this one cabinet. That’s why an air handler problem never stays contained. A tired blower shows up as rooms that won’t cool. A dirty coil shows up as clammy air. A clogged condensate drain line shows up as a stain spreading across the ceiling under an attic unit.

The filter is the homeowner’s job, and it’s a bigger one than it looks: one fresh filter protects the blower, the coil, and your airflow all at once. Check it monthly during cooling season. Keep the area around the cabinet clear, and if your drain pan is easy to see, glance at it now and then. Dry is good.

Is an air handler the same as a furnace?
No. A furnace burns gas or propane and includes its own blower, while an air handler is all-electric and pairs with a heat pump or straight AC, often with heat strips for backup heat. Check the indoor unit: a gas line and flue pipe mean furnace, wires and refrigerant lines mean air handler.
Where is my air handler usually located?
In this part of Louisiana, most often the attic, with utility closets and garages next in line. Follow the sound of rushing air when the system runs, or look for the big return grille. The filter slot is usually right at the cabinet.
Why is my air handler leaking water?
The coil inside pulls a surprising amount of water out of humid air, and all of it is supposed to leave through the condensate drain line. When that line clogs, the pan overflows or a float switch shuts the system off. Cut the power and schedule a repair before the water reaches drywall.
Are electric heat strips expensive to run?
They draw much more power than a heat pump doing the same job, which is why systems treat them as backup rather than the main event. In a mild Acadiana winter they don't rack up many hours. If yours seem to run constantly, that's worth a service call, not a bigger power bill.
