Single-Stage vs. Variable-Speed AC

A single-stage air conditioner has one setting: full blast or off. A two-stage unit adds a lower gear it can cruise in, and a variable-speed (inverter) system adjusts its output continuously to match what the house needs. In Louisiana, staged and variable systems earn their keep through humidity control, because longer, gentler runs pull far more moisture out of the air. Three Ways to Run a Compressor

A single-stage air conditioner works like a plain light switch: the compressor runs at 100 percent or not at all, nothing in between. A two-stage unit adds a low setting it can cruise in, saving full capacity for the brutal afternoons. A variable-speed system, also called inverter-driven, is the dimmer switch of the family: its compressor ramps smoothly across a wide range and holds whatever output the house needs at that moment.
