How Often Should a Heat Pump Be Serviced in Louisiana?

How Often Should a Heat Pump Be Serviced in Louisiana?

Twice a year: once in spring before the cooling season and once in fall before the first cold front. A furnace only works a few months, but a heat pump does both jobs, so in Louisiana it runs almost every day of the year and wears like it.

Why Once a Year Isn’t Enough Here

A heat pump is one outdoor unit that moves heat out of your house in summer and pulls heat into it in winter. Up north, it might sit idle for long stretches in spring and fall. In Acadiana it gets very little rest. It runs hard from April through October against heat and Gulf Coast humidity, then flips to heating mode for our short, damp winters.

That’s roughly double the run hours of a system in a milder climate. Most manufacturers, Lennox included, recommend annual professional maintenance at minimum, and a heat pump under this kind of load benefits from a visit each season. Skipping it can also put your warranty at risk, since many require proof of regular service.

What Each Visit Covers

The spring visit focuses on cooling: cleaning the outdoor coil (the metal fins that release heat), clearing the condensate drain so it doesn’t back up and leak, and checking the refrigerant charge.

The fall visit focuses on heating. The tech tests the reversing valve, the part that switches the system between heating and cooling, plus the defrost control that keeps ice off the outdoor coil on frosty mornings. They’ll also check the backup electric heat strips, which kick in when it’s too cold for the heat pump to keep up.

Both visits include electrical connections, capacitors (the small parts that help the motors start), and airflow.

What You Can Do Between Visits

  • Change your air filter every one to three months. Monthly is smarter during pollen season or if you have pets.
  • Keep two feet of clearance around the outdoor unit. Trim shrubs and rake out leaves.
  • Rinse the outdoor coil gently with a garden hose after storms or heavy pollen. No pressure washer.

DIY or Call a Pro?

Filters and clearing debris are yours to handle. Refrigerant, electrical parts, and the reversing valve need a licensed technician. If your heat pump is blowing lukewarm air, running nonstop, or icing over for more than an hour, skip the waiting and book heat pump repair.

The easiest way to stay on the twice-a-year schedule is a maintenance plan, which covers both seasonal visits. We serve homes in Lafayette and Abbeville and across Acadiana. There’s usually a maintenance plan offer on our specials page, so take a look before you sign up.
