The Trick Is Under Your Feet
Every air conditioner is a heat mover, and how hard it works depends on where it has to move the heat. A standard system fights the weather: pulling warmth from freezing air in winter, pushing heat into a 95 degree afternoon in summer. Geothermal opts out of that fight. A few feet below your yard, the soil ignores the weather almost entirely, holding a steady 65 to 72 degrees across South Louisiana no matter what the thermometer upstairs says.
A geothermal system runs a sealed loop of buried pipe through that stable ground, circulating a water-based solution that trades heat with the earth. In summer, your home’s heat flows out to the cool soil. In winter, warmth flows in from it. The indoor heat pump unit concentrates that exchange and your ductwork delivers the result, the same as any central system.
Three Parts, One Quiet Machine
The ground loop does the trading: sealed piping buried vertically in deep bores on tight lots, or horizontally in shallow trenches where the property has room. The heat pump unit lives indoors and does the concentrating, using the same refrigeration cycle as any heat pump, just aimed at the ground instead of the sky. Your ductwork distributes the comfort. No outdoor condenser, no fan roaring beside the patio, nothing sitting in the sun and salt air waiting to corrode.
That’s also why the numbers look the way they do. Trading with stable ground instead of hostile air lets a geothermal system move 3 to 5 units of heating or cooling for every unit of electricity it consumes, and for most homes that shows up as a 40 to 60 percent drop in heating and cooling costs.
Why Louisiana Is a Geothermal Sweet Spot
Up north, geothermal earns its keep mostly in winter. Here it works both shifts. Our cooling season runs the better part of eight months, and every one of those hours the system is dumping heat into mid-60s soil instead of wrestling the afternoon air. Then the occasional winter cold snap arrives and the same loop pulls warmth from ground that never noticed the front come through. A climate that punishes conventional equipment on both ends of the year is exactly the climate where a stable-temperature partner pays off most.
The Honest Trade-Offs
Geothermal costs more up front than a conventional system, because you’re buying the ground loop along with the equipment, and installing one means drilling or trenching your yard for a day or two. The federal tax credit that once offset 30 percent of that cost ended for systems placed in service after 2025, so the math now rests entirely on operating savings and equipment lifespan. For many homes that math still lands comfortably in geothermal’s favor; for some lots and budgets it doesn’t, and we’ll say so plainly.
